The house band once again opened the affray with a version of the Skynyrd’s Simple Man which nobody had played before – this may have been evident ! Chris Perrin, Vocal & Guitar, Matt Guitar, Tony M Bass, Tony S Harp, Mario Drums. They continued with ‘Stormy Monday’ and stomped through ‘Further On Up The Road’.
Next band on stage consisted of Shaky Stuart on Vocals and harp, Rick on Bass, Pete on Guitar, Evan Drums, Justin on guitar. Pete started with a few bars of ‘ Smoke On The Water’ just to piss everybody off !! Stuart took the blues by the throat with renditions off ‘Going Down to Louisiana’ and ‘Lookin’ For Somebody’ with some very gruff Wolf like vocals and splendid harp playing. Next we witnessed the collective talents of Heather on vocals with Lee on Guitar, Russ on Guitar and Bass, Rich on bass, (but never two basses!) Gordon on drums. A rather Steve Vai styled version of the Beatles’s ‘Come Together’ left mouths open. It was pointed out to Lee that he had used up his allotted quota of notes after the first song !! Great playing Lee !! They then performed ‘Long Train Runnin’ and ‘Brown Eyed Boy’.Images were brought to mind as H was between 2 guitarists singing “………over me”!!!!!!! Next up was Chris Perrin vocal and guitar , Johnny C guitar, Geeza on Harp, Rich on bass Mario Drums. ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’, ‘Red House’ and ‘Little Wing’. Johnny G was next on the list but had disappeared (thanks for letting us know bud!) leaving a gap of 15 mins in the schedule hurriedly reorganised by TonyM So next up was in fact Tony M Bass, BIG John Vocals & Geez, Gaz on Drums, Lee guitar, Justin guitar. They played ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and Winwood’s ‘Give Me Some Lovin’ The house band were back on the boards with Heather for a rendition of ‘Mojo’ Tony Stokes was conducting a harp workshop for Shaky Stu and Geeza the subject of which was ‘sticky reeds’ and ‘chromatics’ ! Crikey and I thought guitarist were the worst ! Unshaven seemed to be the theme tonight but we didn’t asked Heather ! It was evident from Tony Mottram’s & Gaz’s new array of facial hair that not shaving had been his New Year’s resolution. A major debate broke out as to how many notes there were in a pentatonic scale. Whilst it is obvious there are five it should be noted that the Blues scale, a modified pentatonic, contains 7 or possibly 8 notes. 2 usual extra’s are the Major Third and the Flattened Fifth. This can be extended also by adding Major second/sixth. Now look fellas I’m not getting my only guitar book out of the loft again ! The theory should always be left to the theorists whilst the rest of us just play!! |
