BLUES HOUNDS 28th FEB 2006
Early evening during the sound check time, when amps are first turned on and guitars plugged in, occasionally some magic jamming moments occur. This week Matt and Bryan teased a slow blues in C in a fairly quiet mood. Mario eventually joined in on harp and others fell in alongside. Bryan then moved to the drum kit and built up the dynamics to the end. Tonight’s house band were the mighty ’58 Deluxe, comprising of their now time honoured line up, Mario (drums), Tony M (bass), Tony S (harp) and Bryan (Guitar & vocal). I’m reading directly from some-ones’ notes here as I was enjoying the music too much at this stage. There first number was an instrumental followed by a ‘raw’ version of ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ and a very passionate ‘Five Long Years’. The notes say ‘Bryan sang like Johnny Cash at a prison funeral’ ! Next band on stage was based around Shaky Stu (vocal and harp), Matt (guitar), Pete (bass), Chris B (guitar - from the Tamworth Blues Legends Jam) and back on the drum seat after a 15 year break was a new player at the jam Dougie (drums) – it’s like riding a bike – you never forget !! and he hadn’t !! Hope to see you again soon Dougie don’t leave it another 15 years! The records are somewhat hazy at this point. But ‘Annotator Anon.’ states that the first tune was a laid back story from the deep South. The second was a more upbeat take of ‘Ramblin’ On My Mind’. The third tune – it says Mean red spiders !!! up tempo number ! Why was this a blur I was up there playing this ! The Anon. Annotator also states - ‘Stu’s harp evoked memories of sitting on a porch drinking river water out of a bean tin. Matt’s guitar was hotter than a Texas cattle brand at midday. Rhythm section very solid’. Well it’s a better read than some of the stuff I write !! Jonny G (vocal and Guitar) with Justin (guitar) and Richard (bass) together with Evan (drums) played for us next. They started with a quite funky version of ‘Crossroads’ and then a nice rendition of ‘Early In The Morning’ and finished up with a line or two of ‘Cocaine’. Stevie (Guitar and vocal), Bryan (guitar) Paul McD(bass), Paul (drums). This group played ‘I Shot The Sherriff’ then ‘Hey Joe’ and ended with ‘Midnight Hour’. It looks like there was some chord shouting going on in the backing band – see pics ! The next group: Heather (vocal), Lee (guitar), Pete (guitar), Richard (bass), Tony S (harp) and Dougie (drums). First of all they played ‘Stormy Monday’ Anon Annotator says ‘Tony had wrong harp! at start – surely not!!’ Next they ran us through what I can only describe as a ‘special’ version of ‘Long Train Runnin’’ which was similar in beat and feel to Rip Crack Away played by AC/Dixie but perhaps their Rawhide version !! Nevertheless this is entertainment after all and there was nobody not grinning at the end of this set. I feel sure there was a third number, nothing is recorded. Apologies ! Steve Cash was seen early in the evening – not sure if there was a ‘sign in’ omission or whether he didn’t intend to stay long – next time then Steve !! The house band were back to the stage augmented by Matt (guitar) and Justin (guitar). They performed ‘Can’t Hold Out’ and belted out ‘Bullfrog Blues’. Then Heather joined the stage for a ‘Mustang Sally’ finale ! Tony M had been experimenting with his new camera and the stage lighting. Once again many great pictures from the master - Thanks Tony! What a great night it was! Matt Thorpe BLUES LEGENDS at Wilnecote Hall, Tamworth Friday 3rd. I went along to see ’58 Deluxe and lend our support to Chris who runs the jam night and to check it out too !. There is a large hall with ample car parking. Inside the hall, which has been recently modernised, the floor area is laid out with tables & chairs facing a good sized traditional theatrical type stage from which the band performed. Most of the seats were taken as the night progressed. I would roughly estimate 50 people in the audience. Starting the show was a half hour set from Dave Bristow who played some lonesome blues classics and some of his own songs. This was a nice start to the evening. It was Dave his semi-acoustic and hat ! A half hour set was then performed by ’58 Deluxe who were on good form. Following this ’58 Deluxe then called up the listed jammers to do 2 numbers each. There were six listed guitarists, myself included. There were some good players. A couple were teenagers and they played very well indeed. It was good to see Gordon from the Juke Joint Jammers who got up on the drum seat for several numbers. It was a another good night and next time it’s on you should give it a try! Congrats and Best Wishes to Chris for making it a success. Matt Thorpe |
