Just to annoy Ray- or J.T.A.R to their friends- have been gigging for around a year now. I first saw them live last October, and they were victims to the bad sound of a crew of engineers soon to be jobless.
But they were still good. So when I found out they had a C.D. on sale, I wanted to get it. Of the six tracks, three stick out. They are Love Un-Originally, Signs and Soap Scum. But there’s a lot more to JTAR than assonance. The lyrics are thoughtful, (“I’m in love’s flight, I’m in love…oh never mind”) but at times somewhat odd (“if your body won’t leave me alone, shut your eyes and think of Granny”). In style they’re classic 70’s rock that you'd recognise of Led Zeppelin with ballads added by the Eagles. When a band has 5 good singers, you’d expect there to be harmonies. And it does pay off because the Gospel choir vibe is a favourtie of mine. Think Nutshell by Alice In Chains or Drown in my own Tears by Ray Charles. The signature 12 string guitar is on many of the tracks. To have a signature sound is a nice calling card at this stage in a career. Instrumentation on the record is very rich, with a dulcimer, didgeridoo, the aforementioned 12 string and an African/west indian drum called a djembe. Influences are various, and I think if the band really wanted to have a go at it, they could carve a career. But the facts are they don't play a huge amount of gigs, which is a shame because many people would love to see them. The music they have is a firm foundation to work upon, so depending on what they want from this there are different routes to travel. If they wanted to make some money they could easily find venues to pay them for playing their original material on the strength of this CD. The only thing JTAR need to do is turn that small quantity of gigs into a buzz and higher turnout. Their talent has served them well. This band are for fans of… Led Zeppelin, Jane’s Addiction, Jackson Five ( for the sing along choruses and the mass appeal), PJ Harvey, Guns ‘n’ Roses. |
