Here Goes...
Well... By now you you've probably figured out that my name isn't really Flippy J. Wanksteen... But as far as you're concerned... Yes it is... (or you could call me Joe) Flippy was invented one day so I could log on to Guitar War.. It seemed that all of the cool names were taken. I've been playing guitar for about 18 years. I started in high school right around the time that Randy Rhodes died. Early on, Alex L. from Rush, and Jimmy Page were my two favorite guitar players. I had always liked RR and EVH though, but I must say that without a doubt in my mind, that Jason Becker... ...do I have to even say it? I first started playing on a Kent electric that I got for my 16th birthday... Well actually... I first started playing on whatever I could get my hands on. I use to to borrow a friends acoustic, and my Mom couldn't figure out why my fingers were so cut up. lol. I soon traded the Kent for my first Hondo, then traded that for my next Hondo... a Deluxe 746 '59 Les Paul copy! I was in love! For all I knew at the time, that was the best guitar on the planet. And was for the next couple of years. I spent days & nights at a time with that guitar... falling asleep in the chair with it in my lap.... waking up on top of it in bed....packing clothes around it in the gig bag and leaving the suit case for a trip so I could take it as carry on luggage... you name it! Through the years I've had a few guitars. Right now I'm playing an Ibanez S470 that is transparent black with a mahogany body and a flamed maple top (just got rid of that one), and an RG 520 that is also transparent black, but this has a quilted sapele cap on a mahogany body. My acoustic was a Takamine classical...Some asshole stole it out of my Jeep last year! (boy talk about pissed!) I play through a POD Pro. I use an Alesis SR-16 (sometimes) for drums, or Fruity Loops...I just started getting into Acid 4 too. All of my external stuff runs through an old Mackie CR1604 16 channel mixer, then into my computer. I use Cakewalk Sonar 3 to record with, and I use Power Tab for some MIDI stuff...Just til I get Sonar figured out! |

I was born in St. Louis, MO on December 14,1966. At about age 5 my family got an organ. My parents heard me goofing around on it, and so started lessons. I wasn't really into it... I mean who WANTS to play organ!
When I was 13 we moved to St. Petersburg, FL. It was here that I discovered my first love...The guitar. I had just turned 16 and got one for my birthday. I put it down about a year later for Army basic training, came back home on leave and heard Yngwie, then picked it back up and haven't stopped since. That was about 17 or 18 years ago. I have been in a couple of bands... Neue Regel; that was the first one. I had fun in that one! We were pretty much a band that played and hosted warehouse parties. Crimson Glory shared the warehouse with us back then. Those parties were a blast! Paul the singer, (Neue Regel) and I lived in the warehouse for a while. What a Trip!! Girls used to bring us food (among other things) because we didn't have jobs... We weren't lookin' either! We practiced all night.... all day.... then the rest of the band would come, and we'd practice some more... Then we'd open the doors... And there would would be girls, beer, food... Then we would just jam. The warehouses were set up so that they were facing each other across an alley. There were about 4 or 5 bands at any one time practicing in this facility, and we used to plan huge parties on the weekends. In most cases we would play 1 set, then another band would play a set, and so on. We would all usually play 2 sets...By that time everyone was good and drunk, then we would drink some more and move all of the equipment into 1 warehouse and do one big community jam. That was always a sight. 15 drunken band members all trying to play Crazy Train....hahahahahahaha!!! Steel Angel was another band that played at the warehouses, and the band that I turned my best friend Scott on to. He ended up being one of their guitar players... for a while. It's a funny story how I came to be in Steel Angel.... |
