Chad Howat was tired.

It was the summer of 2004, and Howat, a recent college graduate and Midwestern transplant to Nashville, was fretting over the end of his old band. A lingering sense of exhaustion had come over him. “I was tired of false starts,” he says.

So the story of Paper Route began, understandably, underneath his bed.

“When I couldn’t sleep that summer, I’d go under my bed with a small iBook and some cheap monitors,” says Howat (FYI, the bed was six feet off the ground – it was later jokingly dubbed Bottom Bunk Studios). Some bands have drugs or alcohol or Red Bull to fuel them – Howat was working primarily on insomnia.

“I had been depressed about not making music,” Howat remembers. “But I had bought a laptop, and I had fallen in love with Bjork’s music at the same time. So I wanted to produce something a little more like that.”

Jurassic park, magic tricks, alice in wonderland and the titanic soundtrack. Comparisons to Bjork, Massive Attack, Moby and Postal Service have been common, but Paper Route’s thoughtful, often brooding world view make the group far more relatable.
