While Porcupine Tree has been making waves in prog rock circles for some time—18 years, in fact—this London-based band is relatively unknown among listeners of rock radio. Deadwing, however, could be the album that crosses over and finds new fans in broader genres. In addition to complex time signatures and heavy rhythms it also includes lush, sweeping soundscapes and immediately accessible tunes like the piano-piloted Lazarus.

While much of Deadwing conjures comparisons to modern progressive rockers like Dream Theater and King’s X, more than a few numbers elicit similarities to Pink Floyd’s space-rock blueprint. And like the legendary rockers, Porcupine Tree’s attention to production detail is evident on Deadwing. In addition the CD comes with an impressively artistic booklet and –having seen them on their recent tour—their live shows include exceptional visual and video footage.

Favorite Track: Track 9, “Glass Arm Shattering”
